A NEW community building has struck a blow for down-to-earth design in skyscraper-dominated Leeds.

The Little London Children’s Centre was a double winner at the city’s annual Architecture Awards, at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

It scooped the New Building Award and the People’s Award, the latter of which is decided by a public vote.

Opened at the end of last year by Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn, the two-storey centre on Meanwood Road offers advice on subjects such as education, childcare, housing, employment and health.

It was designed by Chapeltown-based architects Bauman Lyons. Today director Maurice Lyons said he was “delighted” by the firm’s success at the awards.

He told the YEP: “We tried to innovate in areas like energy usage, and by choosing materials such as slate and stained timber instead of simply going for brick cladding. It’s good to see it has paid off.”
Other winners included the Kirkstall Abbey Visitor Centre, Harewood Stables and the commended group included the Old Post Office in City Square.
