Village officials recognized five Algonquin businesses Monday night for their economic impact, community service, and architectural design.

“While a lot of people think we focus on recruiting business, we also want to retain the ones we have,” Village Planner Katie Thornton said. “These awards are one way of doing that.”

JC’s Guitars, 2212 E. Algonquin Road, was presented the community service award for sponsoring battle-of-the-band competitions and donating equipment to various village events.

Owners Christina and Justin Coffman are known to play for free during community events and their work with the Boys and Girls Club, Thornton said.

The Jewel at 1501 E. Algonquin Road was awarded for providing grocery service to the east side of town and spurring development.

“Additional retail opportunities are available next to the Jewel building, which will continue the requested retail development along East Algonquin Road,” Thornton said.

Algonquin Bank and Trust, at 4049 W. Algonquin Road, was recognized for its architectural design, landscaping, and overall look.

Mega Home Improvement, 208 S. Main St., and the McDonald’s at 500 E. Algonquin Road both were awarded for recent renovations and other improvements.

The Algonquin Economic Development Commission chooses the award recipients.
