An architect’s home life built as a house of cards

Art isn’t easy. Imagine the burden for a visionary architect, who doesn’t merely have to snare the commission and make the beauty. Then people dare to live in one of his objects, name it after themselves and expect the roof not to leak.
We ponder a bit of that almost superhuman dilemma in “Frank’s Home,” [...]

The answer is legendary architect Frank Gehry.
And while jaws may drop at an announcement that Gehry will soon be designing an urban-inspired community in northern Lehi, it’s definitely serious [...]

UC Hires Architect for Downtown Museums

They came, they watched, they listened, they noshed, and for the most part, they liked.
The occasion was the beginning of what promises to be a full-court press by UC officials and boosters as they seek funds and approval for “a place where ideas run free and wild,” a $120 million complex in the heart of [...]

At Wright’s Taliesin, maybe the walls can talk

IT won’t take long for readers of “The Fellowship,” an ambitious new study of Frank Lloyd Wright by Roger Friedland and Harold Zellman, to realize that the book is no ordinary exercise in architectural history. Maybe it will happen on Page 8, when the authors describe the teenage Wright daydreaming about sex, drifting into his [...]

Call it Starchitect Search.
After months of research, and a lightning June tour that took him and museum trustees to 26 buildings in 13 [...]

Local architecture focus of new show

Control board. Tax hike. Brain drain. It can be hard sometimes not to focus on the negative things happening in Western New York.
With so much going awry in the dawn of the 21st century, it’s easy to forget how vital a cog in the nation Buffalo was 100 years ago. A locally produced special airing [...]

Pollack makes an excellent study of architect Gehry

As a child, he made cities and freeways with his grandmother, preferring to use leftover pieces of wood instead of conventional building blocks.
He flunked an introductory course in architecture, and one of his first instructors — perhaps motivated by anti-Semitism — strongly urged him to try something else in life.
Fortunately for the world, Frank [...]

A Church in France Is Almost a Triumph for Le Corbusier

MORE than 40 years after he drowned off a remote beach in the south of France, Le Corbusier remains a transcendent force. Even if some blame him for the modern city’s greatest sins, from the steamrolling of historical neighborhoods to a stultifying emphasis on function, he is indisputably the most influential architect of the past [...]
